Nick Dufill, in his Beyond Crayons visual diagramming Weblog, describes three basic types of mind maps: Library, presentation and "tunnel timeline" maps. Of the three types, the "tunnel timeline" is the one that really got my attention, because it represents a context in which I have never considered mind mapping before. Here is the basic thinking behind this type of mind map, in Nick's words:
"Topics at or near the centre of the map represent the successful outcome, and topics near the edges are the next actions to take towards those outcomes. The relationship with a "tunnel" is that the map shows your project as the light at the end of the tunnel, with your next actions around the walls nearest to you. As you make progress towards the centre, you complete the actions and decisions along the way."
Nick says this type of map structure makes it easy for others to see both the overall objective of the project, as well as how their contribution will help to move it forward. Fascinating! |
